Author Spotlight: Renee Charles, Paranormal Romance Author

Please welcome Renee Charles who joins us today. Congratulations on your new release, Only Love Survives, Renee. Please sit down a spell. Let's get to know YOU:)

How many books have you written?
Oh that’s a funny question to ask an author. Do you mean published? Or do we count box under my desk full of notebooks because I have been writing since I was a kid? LOL I have one published novella with TWRP. This is my first full length novel, and the sequel is in the works.

What works best to keep you focused and on track?
I have taken to writing a master list of goals, and breaking those goals down into bite size pieces in a planner that I can scribble all over and check off as I go. I live for those check marks. LOL

Do you write to make money or for the love of writing?
I have always written because I am compelled to do so. I enjoy the process, like women who make quilts, only I use words instead of scraps of fabric. Now if someone wants to read what I have created it brings me joy, like a quilt maker winning a ribbon at a county fair. If I can one day support my family doing this, well then I guess I would say “Hell ya!  Thank you!”

What is your favorite holiday? And why?
Halloween, for sure. Spiders, bats, and monsters! What’s not to love. Between the smells and crisp bite in the air of fall it is my favorite season. Then there is dressing my kids up in costumes, which angers them now that they are taller than me. LOL

When was the first moment you felt comfortable saying, “I am a writer?”
It was the password to get into my computer for a good year before I could say it out loud, my built in daily affirmation so to speak. Then, the day I signed my first contract with TWRP, my husband and friend took me out for a cocktail in celebration. They toasted me at the bar, and when the barkeep asked why, I said for the very first time, “Because I am a writer.” I got a horay out of everyone and it was very cool.

That's a great story, Renee. What an awesome feeling that must have been.

What type of stories do you like to write and why?
Romance first, of course. But love can happen anywhere to anyone…and that is the key. I like to
write dire/dark circumstances ie: Zombie Apocalypse, with a love triumphs at the end kind of book. Pure Cheese, but I love it.

What type of stories do you like to read and why?
I like twisted stories. Ones where the outcome is inevitable, but you cannot for the life of you figure out how we are going to get there from where we start. That is when an author becomes one of my favorites. If I can predict the outcome easily I lose interest. Nor, do I like long drawn out stories that never get anywhere. Give me a story that slaps me at the end and takes a while to shake off.

Do you put pieces of yourself or your life in your stories?
Oh yeah. I can attribute many of the arguments between the hero and heroine to my hubby and I. If it’s not something we have actually said, I just imagine my hubby’s response to something my leading lady would say and voila! That is one of the perks of being married 20 years.

How long did you write seriously before your first book was published?
See now there is the right word, “seriously." I have always written. And I thought because I exceled in language arts I was throwing down goal on every piece of paper I touched. Then I got serious and decided if I was going to do this, I ought to take the time to learn how to do it well. Four years after that point I signed a contract, but that’s because I had a full time job and kids at home. I always figured their homework came before mine.

What type of music do you favor?
Oh I like everything. If anyone stole my MP3 player they would think I was a little touched. I have everything from Dean Martin and Louis Armstrong to Rob Zombie and ACDC on there.

Oh boy, that is too funny! I am the same way except for ACDC that is:)

Give us some personal information about yourself if you don't mind.
My favorite hobby and pass times are anything outdoors. We camp and fish (well, the guys fish. I hang out on the shore and read in the sunshine.) We also snow mobile, which I love. My favorite is hill climbs, a little bit steep, but not like you see on X games. The only problem is I hate coming down. My hubby and boys wait at the bottom (they don’t care for hill climbs) and laugh because they can hear me scream the entire way down over the top of my sled motor.

About the book...

More about the author:
Author, Renee Charles believes all love is legendary. Being the only female in a house full of giants (husband and two teenage boys) she tends to lean toward the strange and unusual, but inevitably the softer side shines through.

Whether life leads her to a snow covered mountain top, sun dappled forest, or the bottom of a ravine (yes, ditches happen) she always has a pen and note pad ready so wherever the next adventure takes her, she can take notes.

Her own romance began in an insane asylum. Luckily, both she and her husband only worked there. But it makes sense her romance novels have strange beginnings that lead to passionate endings. Romance with a dark twist. In the face of zombies, werewolves, and big foot she always seems to find a happily ever after to leave you with a sigh at the end.

  1. Wow, what a truly cool plot for a book, one that would keep a reader hanging just to find out what's going to happen. Have to get me a copy!

  2. Your book has me intrigued. Never thought I'd like Zombie tales, but then I started watching The Walking Dead-- can't get enough. I got a kick out of Warm Bodies and Zombieland, too. Definitely have to check your tale out.

    Zombie joke:
Question: Do zombies eat candy with their fingers?
Answer: No, silly, they eat the fingers separately.
